UK Jets Free Agency Primer – Part II

Having assessed the offensive side of the ball in our first Free Agency Primer a week ago, we now turn to the defensive side of the ball and in particular to three spots of glaring need – safety, inside linebacker and outsider linebacker. In Rex Ryan’s defense it is the outside linebackers who are principally responsible for generating pressure on the passer and the team is in distinct need of a player who can do that consistently and produce strong play against the run. The Jets safeties have for a number of years come under fire for their inability to cover tight ends and with both Jim Leonhard and Brodney Pool out of contract it is likely that fresh blood will be recruited at the position. Bart Scott is another player who popular opinion suggests has come to the end of the line as a 3-down player on the inside of the defense. He remains an exceptional talent against the run, but is beyond suspect in the passing game and spent much of 2011 watching passing plays from the sidelines, to his deep frustration.
